If you are exploring the historic center of Odesa, a stop at Utesov's Bench is essential. Leonid Utesov was originally born Leonid Osipovich Vasbein, but he changed his name in 1911 when he began his professional acting career on stage.
Leonid Utesov lived from 1895 until 1982. He became the local king of jazz and remains an officially recognized artist and folk hero today. Unveiled in 2000 by sculptor A. P. Tokarev, the monument depicts Utesov relaxing on a bench in the City Garden. From this vantage point, he enjoys an excellent view of the busy pedestrian mall known as Derybasivska Street.

The Musical Legacy and Utesov's Bench
Nearby loudspeakers play the legendary songs of Utesov, including You Are From Odesa, Miska, I And My Masha Are Drinking Tea From A Samovar, Everything Is Well Beautiful Marquise, The Ship, There Is A Town That I See In My Dreams, and A Happy Song Uplifts The Spirit.
Although Utesov originally aimed to become an actor, the dream of leading his own jazz band captured his heart. On March 8, 1929, Leonid Utesov and his band opened their first set at the Leningrad Small Opera Theatre. He quickly became the most celebrated and respected musician in the Soviet Union — a true jazz legend!
A Jazz Legend Remembered at Utesov's Bench
The band's popularity soared rapidly. Before long, they performed at almost every major event in Soviet history, including the Red Square Victory Celebrations in Moscow in May 1945. His fame was not limited to his work as one of the most famous jazz musicians in Odesa. In 1965, officials formally recognized him as "The People's Artist" and bestowed numerous honors upon him.
On March 9, 1982, Utesov passed away. Grieving fans mourned the loss of their most beloved musician and songwriter. A short but powerful inscription at the base of his statue captures this sentiment: "To Leonid Utesov — from a grateful Odesa."
